On Friday and Saturday, June 20 & 21, 2008, the City of Cape May will host a major new event - Harbor Fest, a celebration of the sea, its culture, its economy and its ecology.
Although Cape May’s harbor will provide the overall setting for Harbor Fest; most land-based activities will be held at or near Cape May’s Nature Center and its distinctive blue roofed Trucksess headquarters. Venues around the harbor will be linked by trolley and water taxi.
FRIDAY, JUNE 20
· An evening Summer Solstice Bonfire, story telling, song fest and marshmallow roasting.
· Summer Night skies star watch with the Willingboro Astronomy Club from the deck of the Trucksess Center.
· A Blessing of the Waters with local clergy, to insure a safe and plentiful summer for those who make their livelihoods from the sea and those who enjoy its recreational opportunities.
SATURDAY, JUNE 21
· A street festival with prepared fresh seafood, live entertainment, activities for kids, arts and crafts vendors and educational displays.
· Cape May’s top chefs will meet at the Trucksess Center in order to compete in a scallop cook-off.
· Kayak & canoe regattas in the harbor…a point-to-point navigational challenge, as well as birding programs for boaters and bathers.
· Other activities planned for Saturday include, a wreath laying at the fisherman’s memorial, Around Cape Island Boat Tours, Wharf Tours, a Coast Guard demonstration, educational programs, junior fishing contest and kayak eco-tours. The Cape May Lighthouse will be open daily for tours and climbs throughout the weekend.
· Transportation via a trolley service will be provided by MAC. This trolley service will connect the venues around the harbor including the Nature Center, Fisherman’s Memorial, Harbor View Park, and Schellenger’s Landing.
Since its inception as a whaling village in the 17th Century, Cape May’s economy and culture has been linked to the sea. But with the promise comes a challenge. Harbor Fest is intended to heighten awareness and appreciation of this fragile resource.
This event is a partnership of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), the Nature Center of Cape May, Rutgers Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences and the Cape May Tourism Commission with support from the Canyon Club, the Cape May Sea Food Association, Capemay.com, SeaTow and the Whale’s Tale.
