Devienne   Trio
Arriaga     String Quartet No. 3 in E-flat
Mozart     Clarinet Quintet
The young prodigy Mozart created quite a sensation traveling through Europe with his father in the 1750s and ‘60s.  His name and the power of his phenomenal performances and his growing compositional canon made him a reference point for many who tried to make it in the music field of the 18th and early 19th centuries: when the Mozart name “stuck” to a young musician, good things could happen.  Witness: the very young Juan Crisostomo Arriaga became known as the “Spanish Mozart,” while across the Pyrenees, the prolific François Devienne, a fine woodwind player, was often referred to as the “French Mozart!”  This program presents these two lesser-known composers in very fine examples of their work with one of the great standards of all chamber music, the actual Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet.

BABATUNDE LEA
Babatunde Lea’s vast experience of nearly 40 years as a master percussionist, as well as the spiritual depth and resonance he brings to everything he does, has made him one of the most esteemed musicians of the past half century. The way that music connects with audiences and with the rhythms of life is essential to his musical philosophy: He  draws a lot from African culture, where music accompanies everything... from birth ceremonies to funerals.
